We recently had the great fortune to acquire what we feel is an historically important instrument in the bass world and especially when it concerns Tobias basses. This piece was made for a gentleman named John Scudder in '78-'79. He was then playing/touring with a band called The 2nd Chapter of Acts. Although it was thought that this was the only doubleneck bass ever made by Mr. Tobias, we have discovered through correspondence with him that it was actually one of 4 made and judging by the letter from Mr. Scudder that is with the bass, it must certainly be the first. This bass surfaced in 1994 and was advertised for $25,000.00 in Bass Player magazine, but soon went back into the shadows until we purchased it in April of this year. Here is what we do know of this exceptional bass:

-We have direct emails from Michael Tobias confirming the bass's authenticity.
-The bass is signed on the back by John Entwistle, Victor Wooten, and Gary Willis.
-The body is Walnut, with a Zebrawood cap.
-The necks are Mahogany with Purpleheart stringers.
-The fretboards are African Ebony.
-The electronics have been modified. All control knobs work, but the middle neck selector toggle switch and lowest of the three body toggle switches have been disabled. The output jack for each neck works and the package includes a special 2 into 1 cable so that you can use both necks together or separately.
-The package includes the original ATS flight case, a 2-1 cable, a handwritten letter and schematic diagram written by Mr. Tobias and a handwritten letter from Mr. Scudder explaining the details of the bass.

When I first saw this instrument, I was torn between it's oddity and importance to the bass guitar world. Tobias basses are known all over the world for their desirability, craftsmanship, beauty and tone. The pre- Gibson examples best exhibit those qualities and our feelings are that this unique bass was a peek at what was to become in the Tobias world. We are proud to offer such a special bass and welcome any inquiries or requests. As always, thanks for stopping by the bottom end of Elkland!
