This is a custom ordered, USA made Lakeland 4 string, with a 35" scale.  A bass with these same specs would run you over $5,000 if your ordered it directly from Lakland today.  This is a monster of a deal!

What makes this bass unique (i.e. "custom")?

For starters this has an incredibly beautiful A+++ burl maple top. These pictures really don't do the top justice.

Next, this bass has a 35" inch scale. This is great for people that love the feel, punch and extra note definition of Lakland 5 strings - but don't want/need the low B string.  Lakland 4 strings are commonly 34", and Lakland's 5 strings are 35". So, if you ever wondered why the strings feel/sound so different on their 4 and 5 string basses - that is why.  With the 35" scale you get more a tight, focused note definition. With a 34" scale you get a little more growl, and a slightly easier to manage fretboard.  So, if you want that articulate Lakland 5 string note definition, but in a 4 string version - this bass is it!

What is additionally cool is that the 35" scale length makes this bass perfect for a B-E-A-D tuning, without the slop that you would normally get when putting a low B string onto a 34" inch scale bass.  So, with a quick intonation/action adjustment you can take this from a standard E-A-D-G tuning, to a B-E-A-D tuning.  This is great for players that want that low B string bottom end, but they may not have the desire (or big enough hands) to get used to the extreme width of most 5 string basses.

Also custom is the black ebony fingerboard, which is devoid of any position markers.  This give the bass a beautiful clean, uncluttered look.  There are side position markers, so that the front of the flawless ebony fingerboard is left to stand out as the neck's centerpiece, unadorned.

The final custom touches are custom Lakland "jazz bass style" pickups, mounted in the standard jazz bass location, and paired with Lakland's hallmark LH3 preamp. Lakland slightly customized the preamp, by adding a subtle passive tone control - which sits conveniently between the pickup pan and bass knobs.  This knob is only active when the preamp is switched into passive mode.

The bass is only a couple years old, and is in fantastic condition.  It shows almost no signs of use (I was the only person to ever play it, and that was infrequently).  The only cosmetic flaw is a tiny patch of laquer checking on the back of the headstock, which is barely noticeable, unless you are looking for it (see pic). This is from the back of the headstock resting on a guitar hanger, and it's incredibly minor.

This comes with the original, Lakland hard shell case - shown in the photos.

I tried to cover everything, but if I left anything out please feel free to ask any questions prior to bidding.

Local buyers in the Los Angeles area are free to come inspect and play the bass prior to bidding.  In person is the ultimate way to inspect any instrument.  So feel free to come on by, plug it in, turn it up, and inspect away - prior to bidding.

In person pickup pays no shipping cost. Shipping to Continental USA only.
