Selling an Ampex AG440 4-track 1/2" Analog Recorder. This is a very nice unit gotten from a family inheritance in Nashville. The previous owner was a reputable engineer who bought it from one of the large studio they worked for, and kept it well cared for. However, it has sat in a their workshop and then climate controlled studio storage for decades unused. It has at least one vintage modification (done in the 70's) from stock, the meters being +4 VU (rather than the standard +3 VU).
Condition:
It tested (without being calibrated) working well, record/ playback on all tracks, and all the transport functions. Some of the levels varied channel to channel, so it definitely needs to be setup and calibrated at the very least. There are a few lamps out, the power light, a couple VU meter lights, a few sel lights, but the majority still work. One of the VU meters glass is cracked a bit at the top, but does not obscure the view. One of the reproduce gain pot shaft is slightly bent, adding a little resistance, but still working fine. The transports have a little more mechanical noise than normal due to age, could use some cleaning and care. It seemed to have low Wow and Flutter and be stable otherwise though. The heads are in excellent shape, replaced at some point in the early 70's, and not used a whole lot afterward. There are some minor blemishes here and there, but considering the age, it is in excellent condition overall.
Extras:
There are several empty 10.5" tape reels, several full used tape reels, one 80% full new tape reel, and several extra cards (bias, record, etc.) that are included with the recorder as well.
