About This Listing

K-Muse Proton Guitar MIDI Converter System from 1992
This is a complete system with extras, a MIDI conversion system for electric guitars using infrared sensors. In 1992, it was able to keep up with John McLaughlin on his album Que Alegria without choking. This is as good an example of '90's tech as you'll find.
It comes with the guitar-mounted pickup, the rack-mountable MIDI converter unit (SN#1621), the controller food pedal, the data cartridge, AC cable, MIDI cable, and the proprietary cables to connect the guitar to the converter to the foot controller. I also have all the paperwork and printouts to help you navigate this device. PLUS I am including a free backup converter unit with proprietary cable and data cartridge (more on this below).

Here's the story, please read it and decide if you're the intrepid experimenter willing to try this. My friend bought this system new and installed it on a Steinberger GL2T guitar. He used it for 11 years and was pretty particular about taking care of his gear. When he passed away in 2003, I got the guitar with this. I used it only in the studio up to 2009, and it hadn't been used since. Yes, it needs a battery. But you can see from the pictures that it does power up and everything worked like a charm up to last year, when I decided I wanted to restore the Steinberger to its original state and I took the converter off.

Please note that I am including a backup converter box that was sent to me and that I never unpacked from its bubble wrap (and don't want to unpack now since I'm shipping it to you) but I know it was working flawlessly up to its packing in 2003. I am throwing this in the deal since I'd have no use for it without the pickup. I am making no guarantees on its operation since I never turned it on and have no way to test it now. Take it as a gift with this unit.
Condition is very good. There is some rack rash on the main converter box (see photos). The power switch works fine, which seems to be an issue on some of these.
Feel free to ask me any questions, I just have no use for this and would like to see a curious player have some fun with it, I know I did.
