About This Listing

This vintage piece is a rare sight. Popularized near the turn of the 20th century, the Mandolinetto combines the 8 string tuning/timbre of a Mandolin with the body shape/size of a Ukulele (or a small parlor guitar).

Based on the instrument's construction, we believe this one to have been made by Regal around 1900-1910. This is based on the shape of the tail, wood choices, shape of the pickguard, style of tuners (with gears above tuning pegs), and inlay pattern, all of which appear to have been exclusive to Regal during this time period. Unfortunately, verification of these instruments is made infinitely more difficult by the lack of any kind of certificate/signature anywhere inside the body (we've checked with an endoscope). Though, based on all available comparable examples from this time period, we can say with some confidence that this was made by Regal instruments.

There are some light markings around the body, but no major divots or cracks in the body or neck. The fretboard is in great condition, showing only one 4-5mm crack on the 12th fret. All things considered, this piece has been preserved fantastically well. It's still very playable, and there is no evidence of structural damage inside or out. The glue holding the neck in place appears to be in good shape and shouldn't need replacing for a while. It does not appear to have been repaired at any point.

The case appears to be original, or at least from the same era, but has fared a bit worse than the instrument itself. It is a canvas semi-soft style case that has fallen apart in several areas. The exterior is stained throughout and tattered in some areas. The leather handle has disconnected on one side.

Overall, this is a well preserved piece that has a very charming, tasteful old-world look. For a potentially 100+ year old instrument, it doesn't get much better than this!

USED/VINTAGE GEAR:

Used and Vintage gear is, by definition, old and fragile. This gear is subject to age and handling wear. Scuffs and scrapes, dents and dings, repairs, modifications and replacements all are to be expected. So, while Guitar Showcase strives to accurately document and describe each piece we list, we can only accept responsibility for what we detail in the listing and what is visible in the photos. Guitar Showcase is eager to verify any additional details necessary to address any concerns you may have: just make sure to contact us with any questions you may have before submitting an offer or buying. Beyond this, Guitar Showcase can offer no guarantee and can accept no returns on Used or Vintage gear. Please be sure you know what you are buying, and please do not think that older, used and Vintage Instruments should be set up in perfect playing condition.

For high priced Vintage instruments, we highly recommend that you either have a local friend try the Instrument or come in and try it in person.

CONSIGNED GEAR:

Some of the gear in the Guitar Showcase Reverb store is listed on behalf of a consignor. These pieces are not the property of Guitar Showcase and as such we can accept no returns on any consigned equipment. Consigned gear is also subject to the same stipulations as Used and Vintage gear, as described above. Please make sure to contact us with any questions you may have before submitting an offer or buying any consignment item.
