About this listing
What was born as one beast may not always stay as that beast - sometimes man comes along and changes the DNA to create a new one. That's what we have here. It's a Fender Precision Bass from 1979, which began life as a normal bass. Then, at some point, it was converted into a fretless monster. The frets were pulled, the slots were filled, and the result was a smooth playing fretless.
We'd say that this would allow your inner Jaco to come out, but he was a Jazz Bass player. So, perhaps this would be a bit more along the lines of Alphonso Johnson. Or maybe John Deacon or Boz Burrell. Or, you just want to be your own fretless P bass visionary - then this could be the right call.
This is vintage P bass from the late CBS era, in a great Olympic White finish that has aged well over time. It has an alder body, rock solid maple neck and smooth rosewood fretboard. The neck is super comfortable. Of course, it sounds amazing, with the classic P bass tone. It's strung with flats and is a ton of fun to play, with great vintage character.
The hardware and pickguard is original, as is the pickup. Obviously the bass was modified by the removal of the frets but other than that, it's original (but no case came with it when it landed here).
This is a great find for a bass player that wants both a vintage piece and a fretless bass that's easy to play. It's in good shape considering the age. Setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop, this vintage '79 P Bass is ready for the next player.
