Mark Hatcher Piña model acoustic guitar, 2015
build (#36), with deluxe appointments. This is called a parlor size, but the
dimensions are the same as a Martin 12 fret 00, so think of it as a
parlor/00. The Master Grade Englemann
Spruce top is gorgeous (even, perfect grain; near-white coloring) and the Gabon
Black Ebony back/sides is striking, and hauntingly beautiful. Neck is figured
Koa with maple and ebony center laminates. Mark did amazing things with the
purfling, decorating the top, sides, back and fretboard of the guitar using a
multicolored abalone that sparkles and shows colors as if light through stained
glass. Plus matching fret markers (3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 12th frets) and a
gorgeous Koa, ebony and abalone rosette. I’ve owned high end guitars, and can
honestly say I’ve never owned (or for that matter, seen) a more beautiful instrument.
Guitar has the following spec’s: 1 3/4" nut, 24.75” scale length, 14”
lower bout, string spacing 2 1/4”, 13 frets (24 total due to fretboard
extension), no cutaway. Headstock is ‘open’with ebony and maple overlays, top
and back, and Schertler 18:1 tuners with black ebony buttons. Frets in
excellent condition, with semi-hemispherical end treatment on them. Bridge is
ebony with abalone dot ebony pins, and binding is flamed Koa on both body and
fretboard. No pickup. All the ebony on this guitar was from the same Gabon
Black Ebony board (fretboard, headstock top and back overlays, heel cap, bridge
and neck center laminate).
The tone is awesome; big sound for a parlor/00. Responds beautifully to light
fingerstyle touch, but also handles being driven hard. Fingerstyle response is
fantastic – treble is strong, it’s well balanced across the strings, and enjoys
an especially strong base response (likely due to the stiff ebony back).
Relatively slim (Taylor-like) neck makes it especially easy to play. Tone in
the video clip is representative of my experience.
No significant blemishes of note on the guitar – it’s in superb condition. One
imperfection: A quarter inch shallow string-change scratch on the middle left
side of the headstock…and that’s it. No other noticeable dings, bumps,
scratches or scuffs (I inspected it carefully, and repeatedly!). Case is black
hardshell (red plush interior), perfect fit for the guitar and in very good
shape - a few minor scuffs on the top, latches are slightly off-bronze in color
but case is solid and everything about it is fully functional.
