1946 Gibson LG-2 "Script logo" with case - Demo added
Imagine taking a 70 year-old Gibson guitar from the case, and being immediately delighted by its' feel, appearance, great action and unique sound. This is an excellent vintage small-bodied Gibson, professionally inspected and set up, with all necessary repairs performed. This guitar is ready for your next performance or recording session.
Added photos and info on 4 December 2019: In response to a customer request, we have added images showing the neck profile, and the width of the nut (1.675").
The sustain is delightful, on both single notes and chords. Chords sound great, with good note definition, in every position. This guitar begs to be fingerpicked - again the note definition is excellent - and it can be as sweet and ethereal as you desire, or if you pluck it a bit harder it enters the realm of raunchy, gut-bucket blues. I imagine this LG-2 quickly becoming the 'go to' guitar for a recording artist who falls in love with this jewel of an instrument.
This script logo LG-2 was made the year following World War II, when Gibson returned to the materials used when this model was introduced in 1942. The top is spruce with "X" bracing, sides and the one-piece back are mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are rosewood. Binding is intact. The 19 frets are in excellent condition and show only light wear; all notes play clearly. It is strung with D’Addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze, Light, .012-.053.
There is the typical finish checking and other minor damage to the finish, which we clearly show in the photographs. While the fingerboard has some fingernail wear on the first three frets; this does not interfere with playing.
Our luthiers (contact information upon request to serious buyers) performed the following repairs: Repair of crack in original bridge - the repair is not noticeable even though I knew where to look. The bridge plate did not need repair. Repair of 7-inch long top crack, and minor cracks near the pick guard and on the top adjacent to the bass side of the neck. Loose braces, and center strips were reglued. Small patch to sound hole.. One missing tuner bushing was replaced, and new plastic tuner buttons were installed to replace the old ones which had degraded, however the tuners are original and function well. No neck set was performed - it was not needed.
The action is outstanding. Action at the 12th fret is 2/32" on the treble side and 3/32" on the bass side. The truss rod is very responsive; the truss rod nut was removed by the luthier and a small amount of lithium grease applied.
Our invoice for the repairs, detailing the work performed, will be included with the instrument. In their shop, I have examined and played on Civil War era Martins, and Gibson guitars from the 1930's to the 1960's they have repaired, and in my opinion, they do first rate repairs.
A pickup had been installed at one time, as evidenced by a professionally cut hole on the lower bout near the peg for the strap (see photos). We we have left it as is, in case the next owner plans to install a pickup.
This guitar will be carefully packaged and will ship in its' alligator-patterned case, which we believe to be original, although it does not have any Gibson markings or badges.
