About this listing
This is a 2020 Fender 70th Anniversary Esquire®, Maple Fingerboard, Surf Green w/ OHSC. Only 505 of these were produced by Fender. It has a Lollar Tele Special T pickup added in the neck position. A 4-way switch replaces the original Fender 3-way switch. The control plate was also changed. The current black, single ply pickguard replaces the original white one. No routing was performed to add the Lollar pickup. I guess Fender used the stock Tele routing to produce these Esquires. The cavity for the 2nd pickup was already in the body. In case you are not familiar with Lollar, they produce high end, hand wound pickups in the USA. This pickup sounds fantastic. You get the brighter sound the Esquire is known for, plus the expanded range and versatility of the added Lollar pickup. This guitar is very light. Around 7 pounds. It has been well loved and well played. This is not a closet queen. This guitar might be on its way to becoming a naturally created relic style guitar. There are scratches on the front, back, and sides. Nothing affects structural integrity or playability. It's all cosmetic stuff. No neck pocket cracks. No truss rod issues. The neck is fantastic. This is the best playing neck of any guitar I have ever owned. The neck is a 7.25-inch radius, 1950 Broadcaster® "U" shape. You can research this neck profile if you want more details. There is some minor fret wear. Probably less than 20%. Tons of life left in these frets. The addition of the Lollar pickup and the 4-way switch really expanded the range and tone of this guitar. If you want a guitar that looks brand new to display in your guitar museum, this ain't it. But if you want a fantastic sounding, lightweight player, take a close look. The very first solid-body electric guitar offered by Fender in 1950 was the Esquire. With an elegant single-cutaway silhouette, adjustable 3-saddle bridge and a lone, repurposed lap-steel pickup in the bridge position - the Esquire laid the groundwork for all solid body electric guitars to follow and foreshadowed its more famous sibling, the Telecaster.Like the earliest Esquire models, the 70th Anniversary Esquire features a pine body - a lightweight wood known for punchy and complex tone - and upgrades it with our roasting treatment, greatly improving the resonance of the body. Other features include a lacquer finish, thick "U"-shaped neck, Tim Shaw-designed Esquire bridge pickup - inspired by an original '50 Esquire from Songbirds Museum in Chattanooga, TN - special anniversary neck plate and tweed case.Production of the 70th Anniversary Esquire will be limited to 2020 only. The original Fender hang tag and COA are included, along with some other papers. The Fender case keys, second set of saddles, and Allen wrench are included.
