Personal Thoughts:
This is a seriously characterful Murphy Lab ’58 ES-335 and the Dirty Blonde finish is a brilliant choice for the model. The lighter finish really shows off the body construction and grain, while the Heavy Aged treatment gives it the look of a genuinely hard-used late-’50s semi-hollow rather than a modern reissue.
The neck is a major part of the appeal here. The Authentic ’58 Chunky C profile has real substance to it, giving the guitar a much more vintage-correct feel than the slimmer ’60s-style 335s. Combined with the 24.75" scale, 12" radius and historic medium-jumbo frets, it feels substantial without becoming awkward.
The unpotted Alnico III Custombuckers suit the platform perfectly, with an open, airy PAF-style response and plenty of dynamic sensitivity. Clean tones have warmth and depth, while pushed sounds retain clarity and harmonic complexity rather than becoming compressed or muddy. The hand-wired loom and Bumblebee capacitors complete a very traditional Historic-style specification.
A superb Murphy Lab 335 with a less common finish, a proper late-’50s neck carve and some of the most convincing factory ageing Gibson offers.
Condition Report:
Very good condition. The extensive checking, finish wear, exposed areas and hardware ageing are all part of Gibson Custom’s original Murphy Lab Heavy Aged treatment rather than subsequent damage. There is some very minor finish delamination to the back of the neck, but otherwise this is a very clean example with no major structural issues or significant additional wear to mention. Supplied with its original Gibson Custom Shop brown Lifton-style case, certificate of authenticity and associated documentation.
