Boosey & Hawkes A clarinet, model Imperial 926. Grenadilla body with metal reinforcement rings at the upper/lower joint (barrel and bell) tenon sockets. Silver-plated keys. Made in 1969. British tone, leaning slightly toward the French style.
The Imperial 926 was built as a mid-range model by the renowned British maker Boosey & Hawkes; this is the A clarinet version. While the company's flagship Symphony 1010 uses a 15.25mm large bore, the 926 is slightly narrower at 15.0mm, retaining British character while stepping a little toward French-style design.
Unlike the broad, heavy sound of the 1010 series, the 926 has a focused core and clear definition. Intonation leaves some room for the player to adjust, but it is far less sensitive to mouthpiece and setup choices than the company's large-bore models, making it a relatively easy instrument to get along with.
Although made around 1970, it was actually played for less than 10 years. Only small dings and light surface scratches are present, with no cracks or noticeable plating loss — good condition for its age. Overhauled with all-new pads (white leather) and corks, and adjusted for regular playing right away. Since an A clarinet sees limited use, investing in an expensive current model from the start can be a big step; this one lets you explore the sound and feel of an A clarinet while enjoying the history of British clarinet making.
[Condition]
Small dings and light scratches here and there. No notable scratches, cracks, or plating loss. Excellent condition that belies its age. Overhauled with all-new pads (white leather) and corks, and fully adjusted.
Accessories: double hard case.
