1954 Gibson LG-1 – Baxendale X-Brace Conversion – Left-Handed
A very cool player-grade 1954 Gibson LG-1 that was professionally restored, X-braced and converted to left-handed play by Scott Baxendale / Baxendale Conversions in early 2026.
I purchased this exact guitar from Elderly Instruments. Elderly listed it as a 1954 LG-1 in project condition and documented it with number X 7106 19. It retains its beautiful original vintage sunburst appearance, solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard.
The guitar was subsequently sent to Scott Baxendale, where the original ladder-braced configuration was professionally converted to X-bracing and the guitar was converted for left-handed play. A second pickguard was added for the left-handed configuration, giving it the distinctive double-pickguard appearance shown in the photos. The Baxendale conversion label is visible inside the guitar.
The result is a genuine 72-year-old Kalamazoo-built Gibson with the feel and character of an old LG, but with the fuller response and projection associated with an X-braced instrument. It is set up as a true left-handed guitar, not simply a right-handed guitar with the strings reversed.
The guitar shows the honest cosmetic wear you would expect from an instrument made in 1954, including finish checking, scratches, small dings and areas of finish wear. I've photographed the more noticeable marks rather than trying to hide them. Please look carefully at the photos for condition.
This should be considered a professionally modified/restored player rather than an all-original collector-grade LG-1. For someone looking for a vintage left-handed Gibson to actually play, however, it's a particularly unusual instrument.
