Rare Gibson BFG 2007 Signed by Les Paul - Red “Alligator"
Hate to let it go but I have to move and not all my guitars can make the trip! This one is an incredible piece of history and would make an amazing Holiday Present.
The 2007 Gibson Les Paul BFG (Barely Finished Guitar) Signed Limited Edition is a highly coveted collector's piece representing a historic intersection of raw, modern guitar design and the legacy of the man who started it all. When Gibson debuted the stripped-down, aggressively styled BFG model in late 2006/2007, they produced a highly exclusive Limited Edition run of 165 total guitars hand-signed by Les Paul himself on the headstock.
The limited collection consisted of the first 52 to 55 guitars produced in each of the three original factory colors: Ink Black (Gator Scale Satin), Faded Transparent Cherry (Alligator Red), and Gold Top. These premium collectors' items feature distinct handwritten serial numbers on the back of the headstock starting from #1955 to signify their place in the rare run. Because Les Paul passed away in 2009, these authentic, hand-signed models have drastically risen in value.
The BFG Blueprint: Key Technical Specs
What makes the BFG unique—and such a stark canvas for Les Paul's signature—is its unapologetically non-traditional, rough-around-the-edges aesthetic:
- The "Reptile" Top: The guitar features a solid chambered mahogany body with a completely unsanded, carved maple top, giving it a rough, distinctively textured "gator skin" look and a very lightweight feel.
- Mismatched Electronics: It pairs a screaming Gibson Burstbucker 3 Zebra Humbucker in the bridge with a warm, gritty P-90 pickup in the neck.
- Unconventional Controls: The standard 3-way pickup selector switch was relocated down next to the master volume and tone wooden knobs. The traditional toggle switch location on the upper horn was wired to function as a factory kill switch.
- Barely Finished Hardware: To lean into the minimalist style, the guitar was shipped with distressed black chrome hardware, an unbound rosewood fingerboard completely devoid of fret markers (dots on the side only), no pickup rings, and no truss rod cover.
This one is 44th Red BFG signed by Les Paul. It is signed on the front of the headstock and is visible in the photos. Very cool and beautiful guitar.
The guitar comes with the OHSC and it’s set up info. The signed BFGs did not come with a CoA, but there is a letter from Gibson discussing it.
Decoding the Serial Number
This guitar's serial number 1998 F is a custom handwritten number specific to this exclusive series, which deviates completely from standard Gibson 8- or 9-digit formats.
- The Number (1998): Gibson sequentially numbered this limited run starting at #1955 (honoring the legacy years of the Les Paul). A serial number of 1998 indicates this guitar is the 44th instrumentproduced in that sequence (1998 - 1955 + 1).
- The Suffix Letter (F): To differentiate the finishes, Gibson appended a letter code to the serial number. While "B" was used for the Black Gator Scale finish, "F" indicates the Faded Transparent Cherry finish variant.
Production and Rarity
- Extremely Limited: Gibson only manufactured 55 guitars of each color (165 total worldwide) for this signed promotional launch.
- The Signature: The headstock features a genuine, hand-delivered signature from Les Paul himselfbefore his passing in 2009, making these highly prized by collectors.
