The 1990 PRS EG-4 (Series 1) represents Paul Reed Smith’s early history as their first-ever 22-fret guitar and first traditional take on a bolt-on "S-style" electric guitar. Designed by Joe Knaggs and built at the original Annapolis, Maryland factory, the EG series was engineered to compete directly with the Fender Stratocaster. Long before the modern John Mayer Silver Sky model, the EG-4 established the precedent for a PRS pickguard-style guitar.
Specifications

- Neck Construction: Bolt-on Maple neck with a short heel and an Indian Rosewood fingerboard.
- Scale & Frets: 25-inch scale length with 22 frets (a milestone shift from the brand's standard 24-fret layout).

- Electronics (HSS): An "HSS" configuration consisting of two single-coil pickups and one humbucker in the bridge (earlier 1990 models shipped with a PRS HFS II humbucker). Controlled via 1 Volume, 2 Tone knobs, and a 5-way selector switch.
- Hardware: Traditional PRS Tremolo bridge. First-generation Series 1 models featured non-locking, PRS-marked Schaller M6 tuners made in West Germany
