The Univox Coily Bass is a semi-hollowbody electric bass manufactured in Japan by the renowned Matsumoku factory and imported to North America by Merson/Unicord from the late 1960s through the 1970s
Key Features & Specs
- Origin: Made in Japan (MIJ) during the late 1960s to 1970s.
- Body Style: Semi-hollow/hollowbody design styled after the Epiphone Casino and Gibson ES-335, featuring a sunburst finish and F-holes.
- Neck: Bolt-on maple neck with a comfortable profile.
- Electronics: Dual pickups, 3-way toggle switch, and dual volume and tone controls.
- Hardware & Mute: Features a floating bridge paired with a string mute bar (bridge mute).
The Bridge Mute
- Function: The original metal bridge mute houses a foam pad that engages against the strings to create an authentic, old-school "thump".
- Maintenance Note: Because these instruments are decades old, the original foam pad often deteriorates or develops string grooves over time, which can cause the metal lip to buzz against the strings or affect tuning stability (requiring the foam to be replaced).
- Tone & Reputation: Players on forums like TalkBass generally agree that the Coily Bass delivers a distinctive, beefy, vintage tone with a notable snarl when pushed.
