This used Oscar Schmidt OS-45 Autoharp is in excellent condition and ready to deliver a warm, shimmering, authentic Appalachian tone with chiming highs and a pleasing midrange depth. A great instrument for songwriting and/or playing folk, bluegrass, americana or worship music.
Crafted with: A resonate spruce and maple body, a red sunburst design on the back, a natural wood finish on the top, and a sound hole with a unique flower shape. This traditional instrument features 36 strings and 21 chord bars, allowing you to play in every key easily. Some slight wear on 2 of the chord buttons, otherwise a very pristine instrument!
Included accessories: Original padded hard case (currently sold separately for $140), a tuning wrench, a strap, large picks for strumming and fingerpicks for more nuanced playing, and a "good as new" Korg chromatic tuner. Just for fun there is also a vintage double cassette tape and instructional booklet that was in the pocket when I received the autoharp. Made me laugh, wish I still had a Walkman to listen to it.
Tuning and shipment: The tuning wrench and the Korg tuner are a necessity when you have 36 strings to tune. I will tune it up before I ship it, but it will invariably go out of tune while being moved and running into different temps and humidity's. The recommendation I have found with a google search says to detune the instrument by a half step as a good option for shipping and I will follow this practice as it makes sense to me. - see below.
"Climate and Humidity Changes: Temperature swings and humidity shifts during transit cause the wood soundboard to expand and contract, which alters string tension.
- Preventing Sharp Spikes: Leaving strings a half-step or a little flat gives the instrument breathing room so sudden bumps or cold air do not push the tension past the breaking point.
- Avoiding Full Slack: Do not slacken or completely detune the strings into a loose mess. An autoharp relies on balanced structural tension from its 36 strings (which pull roughly half a ton of force), and total release can destabilize the bridge, felts, or frame."
