Quality pro-level project bass, featuring classic looks, awesome roasted neck, and choice fantastic sounds!
MIM Fender ‘98 body, Fender tortoiseshell pickguard (gently used), Fender bakelite knobs, high mass bridge, premuim straight Chinese AAA figured roasted neck w dark rosewood FB/binding/inlays/stainless medium frets/rolled edges, new GOTOH lollipop style tuners, Fender string tree, new DiMarzio ‘Model J‘ pickups, quality p‘up screws, fresh & adequate under-p’ups foam. Premium wiring harness features David Starr serial-numbered J Bass Series/Parallel/500K pots/Bourne DPDT tone (pull for hotter series, push for normal parallel circuit), with added independent bridge volume in series — helps control volume boost when switching to series. Usually the series option eliminates bridge pup control, only the neck pot serving volume control of the p‘up pair. Cavities are fully copper-tape shielded and grounded.
Twenty-eight year old body shows some minor wear, a few dings, and maybe on the back what looks like could be original production flaws(?), so please examine pics - but no major chips or divots. Just the right amount of mojo, more subtle than “relic’d.”
Plays very well with low, buzz-free action. Currently strung with meaty, older RotoSound Swing Bass 66 - RNLD, roundwound Ni on steel, 45-105 ga. The neck is very stable. Width of nut is 38mm, neck thickness @ 1st fret is 21.4mm, @ 12th fret is 23 mm. Neck is somewhat D-shaped, a solid contributor to the beefy & responsive tone, and fondly reminds me of a Ltd CS relic’d Special Precision (has jazz neck) I once owned, the neck of which was sorely missed. The smooth satiny finish is reminiscent of an oil-rubbed old double bass neck feel.
Tone is solid — massively thick or thin, great balance of bass/mids/uppers, and very articulate. I personally like the pots adjusted to 80%. For me, the series option is equivalent to an active circuit option, and the extra bridge control an additional mids boost — all without battery concerns. You might not need that P bass after all, this being the true goal of this project.
No case is included, but will be carefully packed. (Hey, if it’s a dealbreaker, I could add a pretty solid older roadrunner-style, with shell inconspicuously compromised on foot edge).
A rock solid player, with winningly classic looks, hot tone choices, ready for your next pro gig!
