Router pegs were used to hold the guitar body onto a routing table where the pickup and Tremolo cavities were cut out and shaped. This technique was used on production Stratocasters from 1954 into the 1960's. It is one of the criteria used to determine an authentic Fender body. The pegs are clearly visible on the 1954 model listed here.
Router marks resembling circles or swirls are evidence that the cavities were indeed cut by a router. This is another feature used to authenticate vintage fenders. Those marks are clearly visible on this guitar. The chiseled wormhole to accommodate bridge pickup better, denotes a late summer 1954 build. After that time period the wormhole was routed with a power tool.
Paint nail impressions/holes. During 1954 productions, 1/16th nails were hammered into the front of the body in 2-4 places where the body could be placed upside down to paint/stain the back and sides and allow for drying away from surfaces. Later in 1955 paint rods were attached to the neck, instead of using nails, to allow for this. There are a total of 3-4 nail indentations noted on this guitar. Sometimes nails were set into the pickup cavity instead of on body surface, depending on the paint technician.
The lower pocket heel is squared on a 1954 Stratocaster as noted on this guitar. From 1955 forward the neck heel was rounded to allow for better player reach onto the higher frets.
