A rare and highly collectible 1978 Boss SP-1 Spectrum, one of the original three Boss compact pedals introduced in 1977 alongside the OD-1 and PH-1. Produced for only a few years before being discontinued in 1981, the SP-1 is a distinctive piece of early Boss history.

This Japanese-made example features the 7300 production stamp, dating it to approximately August 1978.

Fully functional and thoroughly tested. The SP-1 delivers unique frequency-focused tonal shaping, ranging from subtle coloration to pronounced cocked-wah-style sounds. Both Balance and Spectrum controls work properly, and the effect engages and disengages consistently.

Important note about the CHECK LED: Unlike later Boss pedals, the LED on this early SP-1 illuminates momentarily when the footswitch is pressed rather than remaining lit while the effect is engaged. This is normal factory behavior, documented in the original Boss service notes, and not a malfunction.

Power options: Operates on a 9V battery, original-style 3.5mm power connection, or modern 9V center-negative barrel input. Both external power jacks were present when acquired, and all three power options have been tested successfully.

Repair disclosure: A custom-made 10KA/10KC dual-gang Balance potentiometer was installed and provides the effect it should, the electronic switching circuit was repaired using period-correct 2SC536 transistors, the battery cap and spring were replaced, and the power connections were serviced. All controls, electronic switching, and three power options have been thoroughly tested.

Cosmetically, the pedal shows considerable vintage wear, including paint chips, scratches, and worn lettering, as pictured. The original finish has been preserved.

A rare, early-production Boss Spectrum with plenty of vintage character, fully functional and ready to play or add to a collection.
