Vintage Conn 88H tenor trombone with F-attachment (trigger), made in Elkhart, Indiana.
Why an 88H?
• A professional-level horn. The 88H has been a standard in orchestras, college music programs, and conservatories for decades. A new one sells for $3,400+.
• Introduced by Conn in 1954 and developed with input from legendary Eastman School of Music trombone teacher Emory Remington.
• This one was made in Conn's original Elkhart, Indiana factory (production moved out of Elkhart in the early 1970s). Players especially seek out Elkhart-era 88Hs for their warm, rich sound.
• The F-attachment (trigger) gives you extra low notes and easier alternate positions. It's the setup most college and conservatory programs expect a serious tenor player to have.
A great step up for a high school player getting serious, a college music major, or an adult returning to playing.
Condition:
• Main slide moves smoothly and the horn plays well in B♭.
• F-attachment needs its string linkage re-tied: the cord connecting the trigger to the rotor has come loose. It's a common, inexpensive fix any brass repair shop can do quickly, or a player can re-string it themselves.
• Lacquer wear and a few small spots on the bell section, consistent with its age (shown in photos)
Case:
• Original hard case, fully usable. Two of its three latches work; the third doesn't close. Lining shows wear. It protects the horn, though you may eventually want a newer case.
Includes:
• Hard case (if you'd like it)
• 2 mouthpieces
• Christmas Favorites trombone book (Hal Leonard)
Ships carefully packed. Local pickup, drop-off, and play-test also welcome in Washington, DC. Happy to answer questions or send more photos.
