Martin 1977 D-35.
When looking for a dreadnought, the D-28 may be the first to come to mind, with its big, rich low end. But if you've found chords getting crowded or the bass becoming too dominant, and want a more defined, balanced sound that supports the voice, the D-35 is worth a look.
Like the D-28, the D-35 is a rosewood-body dreadnought, but built on a different design philosophy. As its 3-piece back suggests, the sound is tighter: the lows are full without pushing too far forward, comfortably supporting the whole.
This 1977 example shows the D-35's appeal well. The square-rod neck is solid and rigid, and the wood as a whole has matured into a well-resonating state. The tone combines rounded softness with moderately quick response, making it dependable for everything from singer-songwriter accompaniment to solo playing. The cell binding adds a touch of stage-worthy flair. Settled, balanced vintage tone without overstating its age; a guitar you can simply play with confidence.
