JCM800 2203X 100W Reissue – 2014 – Dagnall Transformers

A superb 2014 Marshall JCM800 2203X 100-watt Master Volume Lead head, dating from the earlier production period when these amplifiers were still fitted with Dagnall transformers.

The 2203X is Marshall's faithful reissue of the legendary JCM800 2203, one of the most influential and recognisable valve amplifiers ever produced. Originally introduced in the JMP era before becoming synonymous with the JCM800 range in the early 1980s, the 2203 circuit helped define the sound of hard rock and heavy metal for generations.

Built in England, the 2203X retains the essential characteristics of the original amplifier: 100 watts of EL34 power, a single-channel cascaded-gain preamp, high and low sensitivity inputs and the unmistakable Marshall Master Volume circuit.

This particular example dates from 2014, making it an earlier 2203X reissue from the period when Marshall was still using Dagnall transformers. These are a particularly nice feature of the earlier production models and will appeal to players who appreciate the traditional components and construction associated with classic British Marshall amplification.

Classic JCM800 Tone

The JCM800 2203 needs little introduction. It's one of those amplifiers that has become a benchmark for what a great British valve amp should sound like.

The 100-watt EL34 output section provides enormous punch and authority, particularly when paired with a good Marshall 4×12.

Like the original 2203, the amplifier also responds exceptionally well to pedals. A simple overdrive or boost in front is often all that's needed to take it into considerably heavier territory.

Earlier Dagnall Transformer Specification

One of the particularly appealing aspects of this 2014 example is its Dagnall transformer specification.

Dagnall has a long association with Marshall amplification, having supplied transformers for numerous classic Marshall designs over the decades.

This amplifier comes from the earlier production period of the 2203X reissue, before subsequent changes to transformer sourcing.
