Your mic is done and it came out beautifully. Before I tell the rest of the story, I wanted to let you know to look for the final invoice - you should have it now.
OK, here we go. Once the finishing process is complete, the shell is milled for the connector and a coat of sealer is applied to the newly exposed wood.
A flat "floor" must be chiseled out to provide a proper seat for the connector's ground lug and nut - and more room is created so that there is room to get a wrench on the nut. This is one of the scary parts. These woods are HARD so you you have to use a lot of pressure, even with a chisel "sharp enough to shave with." One slip with the chisel and I could punch through the rear wall......
The connector and pot are installed
To install the knob I use a U-shaped shim (the U clears the pot shaft and nut) of 0.010" thickness - that way I can push down on the knob to ensure it is perfectly parallel with the rear of the shell when I tighten the setscrew. If you ever have to remove the knob for service you can make a shim like this from a business card. Line up the grain at full volume and tighten the setscrew.
And that's it for the shell. Time to make the grill. It starts off as solid aluminum round bar.
I lop off a 3/4 inch billet to begin with, which weighs 6 ounces.
When the grill is done it will weigh 0.6 ounces. The rest is on the floor of my shop!
First the inside profile is turned. The mating diameter is controlled to .001" (0.03mm) - and so every grill is custom fit to its mic.
Quick test fit.....
Then the blank is flipped around and held from the inside, and the outside profile is roughed out.
Then, with progressive grits of sand paper the sharp angles are broken into gentler curves and the machining marks are removed - basically a rough polishing step.
It fits like a glove, but it isn't going to do you much good like this! (I don't push the grill all the on because I make it a VERY tight fit - which allows for any future wood shrinkage. It is hard to get off so isn't worth the risk of dinging it up.)
So it is onto the milling machine to cut the slot pattern.
When it comes off the mill it still has a little flash and burrs, so those are cleaned up by hand before buffing it out to a mirror shine.
Here is The Heumann Element going in. Doesn’t look like much. Wait until you hear it!
I mold my own gaskets to ensure a perfect fit, good shock absorption and the required front to rear acoustic isolation. And voila - it's a mic!
The grill is polished to a mirror shine. If you want to keep it looking that way, don't rest the harp on the grill when you play. You get better tone if you leave as much space between the harp and grill as possible inside your cup - I "space" it with the middle finger of my left hand. The aluminum will oxidize a little over time and get dull - but a a metal polishing cloth will shine it right up - and you can keep it looking nice longer with a coat of automotive wax.
Finished weight is a whopping 5.9 ounces. You will be blown away by how much the light weight frees you up to move, improves ability to cup, and reduces hand fatigue. It looks great and sounds even better! Can't wait for you to give it a blow.
