DESCRIPTION

A classic 1962 F.E. Olds & Son Recording Trombone, made in Fullerton, California during the highly regarded post-Los Angeles Olds era. This is one of Olds' professional-level trombones and is especially sought after for jazz, commercial, studio, and lead playing.

The Recording is known for its distinctive Re-O-Loy rose brass bell, compact dual-bore handslide, quick response, and characterful American-made sound. The rose brass construction gives the horn a warm, rich tonal center while retaining the projection and immediacy that make the Recording such a great choice for jazz and commercial work.

The 1962 Olds catalog places the Recording among the company's professional instruments, and period documentation confirms that the Recording was being produced with the Re-O-Loy rose brass bell and leadpipe by this period.

This horn has the unmistakable Olds Recording personality: fast, lively, focused, and colorful, with plenty of flexibility in the upper register and enough body to sound substantial without feeling like a large-bore symphonic instrument.

Playing Characteristics

The Olds Recording has a very distinctive voice compared with more common vintage American trombones. It combines the quick, direct response of a smaller jazz horn with a surprisingly broad and colorful tonal palette.

The rose brass bell adds warmth and complexity, particularly at softer dynamics, while the dual-bore slide provides a comfortable balance between resistance, response, and projection.

  • Big band
  • Commercial / studio work
  • Lead trombone
  • Solo playing
  • Vintage American brass collections
  • Players looking for an alternative to the ubiquitous King 3B/Bach 6-series sound
