Ibanez has long been one of the major names in modern guitar design. The Japanese brand has had a profound influence on the history of the electric guitar by developing instruments that are particularly innovative in terms of ergonomics, playability and overall design. With its Prestige range, Ibanez takes things even further, combining modern technologies, carefully selected components and, above all, an exceptionally high standard of manufacturing.

Made in Japan, this RGR5121RB-GRF benefits from the expertise of Fujigen, one of Japan’s most highly regarded guitar manufacturers. This is precisely what makes a Prestige so special: behind its thoroughly modern design lies a genuine tradition of Japanese craftsmanship, with meticulous attention to every detail of the finish, neck precision and playing comfort. Ibanez itself defines the Prestige philosophy around three essential concepts: Precision, Performance and Playability, combining advanced manufacturing techniques with traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

This RGR5121RB naturally retains the DNA of the legendary RG family, but in a particularly radical and contemporary interpretation. Its Gray Metallic Flat finish and reverse headstock give it an aggressive, modern appearance that perfectly matches its purpose. The absence of unnecessary ornamentation also leaves the spotlight on what really matters: build quality, ergonomics and performance.

The first contact with the Super Wizard HP Prestige neck immediately confirms the high-end character of this Ibanez. Extremely thin, fast and perfectly consistent, this 5-piece Maple/Wenge neck offers the effortless feel and freedom of movement that have contributed so much to the reputation of Japanese RG guitars. Its five-piece construction also provides excellent rigidity while retaining the direct and precise feel that is so characteristic of Ibanez necks. At just 17 mm thick at the first fret, this is genuinely a neck designed for guitarists who want to move quickly and effortlessly across the fingerboard.

The rosewood fingerboard, bordered by binding and featuring offset pearloid inlays, is fitted with 24 Jumbo stainless-steel frets with Ibanez' renowned Prestige fret-edge treatment. This is one of the details that really highlights the level of work carried out on these Japanese instruments: the fret ends are exceptionally smooth and perfectly integrated into the neck profile, providing remarkable comfort as the hand moves across the entire fingerboard. The stainless-steel frets also offer excellent resistance to wear, along with a precise attack and outstanding note definition.

The Basswood body has been chosen for its balanced and neutral tonal properties. It provides an excellent foundation for this highly modern configuration, allowing the pickups to retain their own character without adding excessive coloration to the signal. The RGR5121RB therefore focuses on precision, attack and definition, exactly what you would expect from an RG Prestige designed for modern tones.

Ibanez has made a particularly well-judged choice here with a pair of Fishman Fluence Modern Ceramic pickups. These active humbuckers deliver an extremely fast response, excellent definition in high-gain chords and a particularly sharp attack. Their output level allows you to go deep into modern metal and hard rock territory while maintaining excellent clarity and note separation. More importantly, the Fluence Voicing system allows you to switch from a modern active sound to a more organic and dynamic character, providing considerably more versatility than a conventional active pickup configuration.

The result is particularly impressive for modern rhythm playing: extremely precise palm-mutes, tight low end, sharp attacks and excellent note separation. But the RGR5121RB is by no means limited to high-gain applications. The second voicing provides a more open and natural response, making the instrument considerably more versatile and equally interesting for clean tones, crunch sounds and melodic playing.

The Gibraltar Standard III bridge perfectly complements this philosophy. This fixed Ibanez bridge focuses on stability and playing comfort, with a particularly low-profile design that feels extremely comfortable under the picking hand. It also provides excellent vibration transfer and allows precise adjustment of both intonation and action. Combined with Gotoh MG-T locking tuners, it offers a particularly reassuring setup for guitarists who value stability and precision above all.

The Luminlay side dots are another highly practical feature on stage, particularly in low-light conditions. Once again, nothing has been left to chance: the RGR5121RB is designed as a genuine professional instrument, where every element contributes to ease of play and overall reliability.

This RGR5121RB Prestige Made in Japan is therefore an excellent demonstration of what Ibanez can achieve at the top end of its RG range. The Japanese craftsmanship of Fujigen is particularly apparent in the precision of the neck, the quality of the fretwork, the consistency of the overall construction and that effortless playing feel that becomes apparent within the first few minutes. It is an extremely modern guitar, yet it retains the exceptional build quality and attention to detail that have made Japanese Prestige instruments so highly regarded.

A particularly accomplished high-end RG: fast, precise and remarkably effective, combining Fujigen's Japanese craftsmanship with modern, high-performance Fishman Fluence electronics. A guitar designed for demanding players looking for an instrument that can keep up with their playing without ever becoming a limitation.
