A custom-ordered D-28 based on the post-2017 renewal model, built with a VTS top.
The D-28 was renewed in 2017 to combine vintage character with modern playability, and in 2025 moved to a newer Golden Era-inspired spec. This 2019 example is a custom order based on the post-2017 D-28, with the selected specs detailed on the included spec sheet.
The main difference from the standard model of the time is the top: Sitka spruce treated with Martin's VTS (Vintage Tone System), a heat treatment aimed at the sound of a long-aged top. The top color is clear, giving a cleaner, brighter look than the standard's aging toner. Bracing is Sitka spruce, forward-shifted, non-scalloped - a structure of this generation, different from the current GE bracing. East Indian rosewood back and sides, black ebony fingerboard and bridge, modern belly bridge with red tortoise-dot bridge pins. Classic D-28 looks: antique white binding, Style 28 rosette, Style 28 mother-of-pearl position markers, and old-style gold headstock decal. Gloss body and satin neck. Modified low oval neck with a 1-3/4" (approx. 44.5mm) nut width - a slim grip with a bit of extra room for chording.
Seven years after it was built, the settled VTS tone combined with real playing time gives a more opened-up sound than when new: tight lows, even mids and highs, and plenty of D-28 thickness and body resonance for strumming, fingerpicking, or accompanying vocals.
