Roland Tr 707 [504600] (10/06)

Released in 1985, the TR-707 is a rhythm composer that remains well-known to this day.
Unlike the 808 or 909, the sound of the fully digital TR-707 drum machine can be heard in countless tracks across a wide range of genres, from synth-pop to acid house, industrial, electro, indie, and alternative, among others.

When it was developed in the mid-1980s, the TR-707 was equipped with an 8-bit/25 kHz (6-bit for some sounds) sample playback engine, which seems very primitive by todayfs standards. At these low bit rates, quantization noise occurs during the decay of the sound, so non-decaying PCM waveforms were used, and decay was applied in the subsequent analog circuitry.Furthermore, discrepancies between the clock and the analog circuitry downstream of the D/A converter caused variations in pitch and decay characteristics. Although the TR-707 lacked the ability to edit waveforms, the combination of these factors ultimately led to the unique, pleasingly lo-fi, punchy sound that would later become highly sought after.

This is the original TR-707. With its white body accented by orange lines and a design that looks like a slightly smaller version of the 909, it remains a popular rhythm machine to this day.
