2024 Deering Vega Vintage Star 5-String Openback Banjo!

Dobson Tone Ring! Made In USA!

This is really Cool. You are looking at a 2024 Deering Vega Vintage Star 5-String Openback Banjo. The Deering Vega Vintage Star 5-string openback banjo offers a fantastic old time tone and vintage vibe. When you open the case of the Vega Vintage Star, you will find a banjo that captures the soul of late 19th century banjos with the playability and adjustability of a modern instrument.

At the heart of the Vintage Star lies a stunning Dobson tone ring. Originally patented by Henry Dobson in 1881, the Dobson balances the low ends with clear highs, and adds just the right amount of sustain to the banjo. The brass Dobson glows from behind the renaissance head, which itself sits on a thinner walled, 12” violin grade maple rim. A knotless tailpiece tops off the setup to produce a classic old-time tone.

The Vintage Star features a durable, low maintenance frosty bronze powder finish, that accents the exotic smokey streaks running through the ebony fingerboard. The finish is also hypoallergenic, which, along with the matching maple armrest, makes for a truly comfortable playing experience.

The Deering Vintage Star banjo is a timeless instrument and as beautiful to look at as it is to listen to.

From The Web:

A bold addition to Deering’s historically inspired Vega line of banjos, this Vintage Star brings about a new distinction of banjo tone with its cherry wood construction that exudes extra warmth over its maple companion. This instrument’s 3-ply cherry rim is thinned down from Deering’s standard spec, providing a more resonant and responsive voice. The rim is paired with a 12-inch Renaissance low crown head, then finished with a heavy and rich-sounding Dobson tone ring — a spec straight out of the late 1800s. You also get a knot-less tailpiece, and Deering planetary tuners come straight out of the historic banjo tradition. However, the Vega Vintage Star’s most striking feature is found not on the pot. This banjo’s quarter-sawn cherry neck is capped with a beautifully streaked slab of smoky ebony, complete with a frailing scoop to facilitate clawhammer playing.

Vintage-inspired from peghead to tone ring

The Deering Vega Vintage Star is an unabashedly old-school banjo with all the vintage-inspired hardware to prove it! Case in point: this banjo’s Knot-less tailpiece is a clear throwback to the most popular banjo tailpiece of the turn of the century — the 20th century, that is. Next, the Vega Vintage Star’s Dobson tone ring traces it roots all the way back to the 1880s, imparting your banjo with superlative clarity, firm bass, and just a touch of extra sustain. You also get a set of rock-solid Deering Planetary tuners and a Deering Gotoh geared 5th-string tuner.

Gorgeous cherry rim and sleek ebony fingerboard

Deering’s Vega Vintage Star banjo begins with a 3-ply cherry rim — a spec familiar to many of Deering’s open-back banjos but with a thinner build for enhanced resonance and response. The rim is mated to a quarter-sawn cherry neck in a vintage-inspired Vega “D” profile, then finished off with an ebony nut and a stunning smoky ebony fingerboard for a sleek look and mellow tone. Finally, the Vega Vintage Star sports a scoop at the end of the fingerboard, allowing clawhammer players to pick further up the neck for a more mellow sound without knocking into any frets.

12-inch rim for tonal depth and warmth

So, 11-inch or 12-inch rim? It’s a tough tonal decision that’s unique to the open-back banjo (resonator banjo rims are almost always 11 inches), and it’s key in shaping the overall sound of your instrument. This particular banjo features a larger 12-inch rim that’s quite a bit larger than its 11-inch counterpart. How does it change the sound? Typical of 12-inch open-back banjos, the Vega Vintage Star produces a deep, rich, mellow, and open response that’s superb at backing vocals, filling out a small ensemble, or in solo banjo applications.
