Excellent condition
The Gibson Custom 1961 ES-335 Reissue VOS in Vintage Burst is a high-end recreation of the early-’60s ES-335, aimed at players who want the look, feel, and response of a vintage Gibson without buying an original. Gibson says the model was developed by studying, scanning, and listening to original examples.
- Semi-hollow ES-335 body: The body is a 3-ply maple/poplar/maple laminate with a solid maple center block. This gives it the airy resonance of a semi-hollow guitar while helping control feedback at higher volume.
- Vintage Burst finish: The sunburst is applied over a nitrocellulose lacquer VOS finish, giving the guitar a subtle aged/patinated appearance rather than a glossy modern look.
- 1961-style neck: It has a solid mahogany neck with Gibson's SlimTaper/Authentic '61 Skinny C profile. It's noticeably slimmer than the chunkier necks associated with earlier ES-335s and is designed for a fast, comfortable feel.
- Rosewood fingerboard: 12" radius, 22 medium-jumbo frets, pearloid dot inlays, and a 24.75" Gibson scale.
- Custombucker pickups: The current VOS version uses a pair of un-potted Alnico III Custombuckers, designed to capture the airy, dynamic character of vintage PAF-style humbuckers.
- Vintage-style electronics: Two volume and two tone controls, CTS 500K pots, paper-in-oil capacitors, and a Switchcraft three-way selector.
- Period-correct hardware: ABR-1 bridge, lightweight aluminum stop tailpiece, Kluson single-line/double-ring tuners, nickel hardware, nylon nut, and the characteristic black 5-ply pickguard.
- Construction details: Long-tenon mahogany neck joint with hide-glue fit and other vintage-oriented construction details are part of the Custom Shop specification.
How it sounds
The ES-335 occupies a wonderful middle ground between a solidbody and a fully hollow guitar. The bridge pickup can deliver a biting, articulate rock/blues sound, while the neck pickup is warm, round and jazzy. Rolling back the volume gives you a particularly expressive, woody clean tone.
The Custombuckers and semi-hollow construction make it especially good for:
- Blues and blues-rock
- Classic rock
- Jazz
- Country and roots music
- Soul/R&B
- Clean or mildly overdriven lead playing
It's also a remarkably versatile guitar: you can get warm and smoky, bright and articulate, or thick and singing without changing instruments.
The overall character
What makes the '61 Reissue particularly appealing is that it isn't simply a modern ES-335 painted to look old. The slim 1961 neck, rounded early-'60s body details, dot inlays, vintage hardware, Custombuckers, lightweight tailpiece, and VOS nitro finish all work together to give it a distinctly vintage-oriented character.
