Construction and Design

The GK Pro Negra differs from a traditional full-depth classical guitar in several important ways. The body is slightly shallower, the nut is narrower at 50 mm, and the neck is designed for a flatter setup with very little relief. These features make the guitar feel faster and more immediate, especially for flamenco, rumba, Latin fusion and crossover playing.

The soft cutaway allows much easier access to the upper register. This is especially useful for contemporary flamenco and stage work, where playing above the 12th fret is common.

The solid European spruce top provides a quick attack and strong projection, while the solid Indian rosewood back and sides give the guitar more depth and sustain than a traditional flamenco blanca.

Sound Character

The GK Pro Negra has a distinctly faster and more percussive response than a normal classical guitar, but it is fuller and darker than a typical flamenco blanca.

The spruce top produces a very immediate attack with crisp articulation. Notes start quickly, which is especially important for rasgueado, picado and rhythmic accompaniment.

The rosewood body adds considerably more bass depth and harmonic complexity. As a result, the lower register is stronger and more rounded than on a cypress-bodied flamenco guitar, while the trebles remain clear and well balanced.

The guitar has a lively, punchy character with strong projection, but it is not excessively dry. There is enough sustain and harmonic richness to make it useful for classical, jazz, bossa nova and fingerstyle in addition to flamenco.

The overall sound can be described as fast, powerful and balanced, with deep bass, clear mids, crisp trebles, strong attack and good sustain.

Amplified Sound

The Fishman Prefix ProBlend system is one of the most important features of this model. It combines an under-saddle pickup with an internal microphone, allowing the player to blend clarity and body resonance.

The pickup provides definition and resistance to feedback, while the microphone adds air and natural acoustic character. The onboard EQ makes it practical for stage use without requiring an external preamp.

Amplified, the GK Pro Negra remains relatively natural sounding for a nylon-string stage guitar. The attack stays clear, while the microphone blend helps reduce the overly sharp piezo character that can occur with simpler pickup systems.

The “Negra” Concept

The word “Negra” refers to the use of rosewood back and sides rather than the cypress traditionally used for a flamenco blanca.

A negra guitar generally produces deeper bass, longer sustain and a richer harmonic response. It still retains the low action and fast response expected from flamenco construction, but the voice is broader and more complex.

The GK Pro Negra follows exactly this concept: flamenco-style playability combined with the tonal depth of rosewood.

Cordoba and the GK Series

Cordoba was established with the goal of combining traditional Spanish guitar construction with modern consistency and stage practicality. The company became especially well known for classical and flamenco guitars built with Spanish-style construction methods such as fan bracing and Spanish heel neck joints.

The GK series was developed specifically for players who needed fast flamenco-style playability in a stage-friendly instrument. The line became closely associated with the Gipsy Kings style of playing, particularly rhythmic rumba flamenca and amplified performance.

The GK Pro Negra is the more refined all-solid version within that concept. Compared with the GK Studio Negra, it uses higher-grade solid woods, an ebony fingerboard, improved electronics, premium hardware and a more elaborate rosette.

About the Maker

The GK Pro Negra should not be described as the work of one individual luthier. It is a Cordoba production model built according to Cordoba’s design and construction standards.

The term “Luthier Series” refers to its position within Cordoba’s higher-grade range rather than indicating that one named artisan personally constructed the entire guitar.

Its design philosophy comes from traditional Spanish guitar making, especially the use of a Spanish heel, fan bracing, solid tonewoods and classical body geometry, adapted for modern stage use.

Overall Assessment

The Cordoba GK Pro Negra is a professional-grade flamenco negra designed for players who want both acoustic quality and stage versatility.

Its solid European spruce top, solid Indian rosewood body, ebony fingerboard, 650 mm scale, 50 mm nut, Spanish heel construction and Fishman ProBlend system make it especially suitable for flamenco, Latin music, jazz, crossover and amplified nylon-string performance.

Its strongest musical qualities are a fast attack, strong projection, deep bass, clear articulation and greater sustain than a traditional flamenco blanca, while still preserving the quick response and low-action feel expected from a flamenco-oriented instrument.
