ESP Edwards E-AL-166 BLACKY Alexi Laiho Signature
I offer the Edwards E-AL-166 BLACKY Alexi Laiho Signature, manufactured in Japan by Edwards, a brand belonging to ESP.
This is one of the most characteristic models signed by Alexi Laiho - guitarist and frontman of Children of Bodom. BLACKY was created as a uncompromising design subordinated to exactly what his playing style was known for: a fast neck, a single pickup at the bridge, Floyd Rose, an active booster, and a maximally simple control layout.
This specimen comes from an older version of the specification, still equipped with an active Seymour Duncan Blackouts, which further distinguishes it from later BLACKY variants encountered with other pickups.
Serial number: ED2037683.
Made in Japan.
Neck-through-body construction
The E-AL-166 BLACKY is not just a guitar with a characteristic appearance. Constructionally, it is a full-fledged, high-end Japanese instrument.
The body is made of alder, while the three-piece maple neck runs through the entire length of the instrument in a neck-through-body construction.
This solution provides very good access to the highest positions and a characteristic, direct feel during play.
The fretboard is made of ebony and equipped with 24 Extra Jumbo frets. The upper part of the fretboard features a factory scalloping, characteristic of Alexi's signature.
The whole is complemented by black Saw Tooth markers, dark binding on the neck and head, and a characteristic asymmetrical V body.
Seymour Duncan Blackouts
The guitar is equipped with a single active humbucker:
Seymour Duncan Blackouts AHB-1B
This is an earlier configuration of the E-AL-166 BLACKY model.
The minimalist electronics layout includes:
- Seymour Duncan Blackouts AHB-1B
- 1 x Volume
- ESP MM-04 Preamp Booster
- separate booster switch
There are no additional pickups, Tone regulators, or unnecessary elements here. The layout was designed for a strong, selective high-gain sound and a very fast response to articulation.
Floyd Rose and Gotoh
The instrument is equipped with a fully double-locking tremolo system Floyd Rose, allowing for a very wide range of arm movement while maintaining tuning stability.
The head features Japanese Gotoh tuners.
The black hardware blends well with the overall BLACKY style and leaves the instrument almost entirely black.
BLACKY
The finish of this model is directly related to the aesthetics of Alexi Laiho's signature.
Metallic black has been combined with glossy black pinstripes running through the body. Depending on the lighting, the difference between the surfaces is subtle or very pronounced.
On the back of the body, there is a characteristic COBHC - Children of Bodom Hate Crew logo.
The whole is complemented by:
- Saw Tooth inlays
- black binding
- black hardware
