The Chieftain is Matchless’ 40-watt EL34 platform, pairing the company’s signature touch sensitivity and harmonic detail with a little more weight, headroom, and low-end authority than the EL84-based models.
The standalone head version is a bit less common on the used market than the Chieftain combos, making this a great option if you want the Chieftain circuit without committing to the large and heavy 2x12 format.
Great studio amp with plenty of flexibility — articulate cleans, edge-of-breakup tones, and the thick, harmonically rich drive Matchless is known for.
