We have just received a 1970 Super 400CES.

The Super 400 was originally released in 1934 as the pinnacle of acoustic archtop guitars. In 1951, the electric version—the Super 400CES—was introduced, naturally reigning supreme as the ultimate electric archtop guitar.

True to its status as a top-tier model, the Super 400 features an all-solid-wood body. Much like a violin, the elegant body arch is carved from thick stock rather than being pressed. While laminated wood was used for the back panel during the 1960s, this 1970 model dates from the period when the all-solid construction method was reinstated. Additionally, while the late 1960s saw the adoption of a narrow neck (approx. 39mm nut width), the design reverted to a wider 44mm neck from 1970 onwards; in short, the specifications closely mirror those of the 1950s.

Beyond the choice of wood and construction methods, top-quality components are used throughout. All metal hardware is gold-plated (note: the bridge on this specific unit has been replaced with a nickel part). The Kluson "Sealfast" tuners are particularly noteworthy; they were rare components reserved for only a select few Gibson models. Unlike the widely available Kluson "Deluxe" tuners, these feature a gearbox encased in heavy-duty die-cast metal—a choice likely made to ensure durability, reflecting the instrument's status as a guitar meant to last a lifetime.

The pickups are original "Numbered PAF" units. They are characterized by a natural sound that faithfully captures the instrument's rich resonance. The compression effect unique to full-hollow-body guitars stems from the body's own acoustic properties, and this instrument delivers that experience in abundance. Above all, the Super 400—belonging to the largest class of guitars with its 18-inch body width—captivates with a deep, resonant tone that stands in a league of its own. Its sound, anchored by a solid low-end foundation, embodies the quintessential jazz tone; simply plug it into an amp, and you instantly evoke the sound of legendary recordings.
