A boost/overdrive pedal featuring seven clipping diodes

J. Rocket Audio Designs, a high-end effects pedal brand based in California, has released the Archer Select, a boost/overdrive pedal equipped with seven clipping diodes.The Archer Select features a total of seven different clipping diodes (OA10, 1N270, 1N695, 1N34A, D9B, D9E, RED LED)?the three types used in the Archer, Archer Icon, and The Jeff Archer, plus four additional types, including a light-emitting diode.

You can switch between these clipping diodes using the Clipping Control and the Clipping Footswitch. Although the controls are simple?consisting only of Gain and Treble to adjust the distortion?switching between the clipping diodes allows you to craft a wide variety of K-style tones, ranging from boost to stack drive. The guitar input, output, and power input jacks are located on the back panel, while the left side features a D.I. output jack.

The D.I. output incorporates a built-in D.I. speaker simulator modeled after a British 4x12 cabinet. It can be used for a variety of applications, such as feeding directly into a mixer or connecting to an external interface for direct recording. Like existing Archer models, it features a sturdy metal enclosure and a very compact design.
Controls
Since these are gclippingh diodes, youfll need to hear whether the pedal is clipping or overdriving to discern the difference. You wonft hear a difference unless you turn up the gain. The difference is most noticeable when the gain is turned up. Keep in mind that since most K-Style users set the gain low, the clipping diodes have only a subtle effect. While there is indeed a difference, it is very subtle.

Note: You may hear a slight popping sound when turning the diode selector knob. Please disengage the footswitch before turning it.
Clipping Control and Diode Names
When the clipping footswitch is off, the unit uses the OA10 diode. When the clipping footswitch is on, it uses the set of diodes selected by the clipping dial.

While there are subtle differences between all the clipping diodes, they are arranged in order from those with the lowest forward voltage to those with the highest. This means the volume will spike the most between the OA10 diode and the red LED.

Additionally, since all components except the LED are NOS germanium diodes, they are not easy to obtain. While a steady supply is currently available, this may change in the future.
