c1895 SR Leland & Son Eclipse Cornet Worchester MA
Here is a very rare SR Leland & Son Bb Eclipse model cornet made in Worcester, MA around 1895. They started making the Eclipse model in the mid-1880s and this one with serial number 536, is near the middle of their total production of 1,000. Their ads claimed that these used French-made valves as well as French brass, then produced these in their shop in Worcester. This is one of the fanciest examples I have seen with the decorative ferrules and receiver and a wonderful engraving.
This example has some dings and slight wear from use but still has very tight valves and plays well. It comes with a Bb tuning shank, case, and Eclipse #4 mouthpiece in great shape. Overall, the silver plating is in good shape. The top valve caps could use new corks.
The length = 13"; 5" bell; 0.465" bore; plays in High Pitch A = 455 hz
