Some collaborations have truly left their mark on guitar history, and the partnership between Ibanez and George Benson is undoubtedly one of them. For several decades, the American guitarist and the Japanese brand have shared the same goal: creating an instrument capable of delivering the richness, warmth and precision of Benson’s jazz playing, while offering a guitar perfectly suited to the demands of the modern musician. The GB10SE is a direct continuation of this prestigious legacy.
With its superb Brown Sunburst finish, elegant gold hardware and beautifully refined hollow body design, the GB10SE immediately exudes a distinctly high-end character. Its aesthetic faithfully embraces the classic styling of Ibanez jazz boxes, combining understated elegance with a timeless appeal that feels equally at home on stage or in a more intimate setting.
The design is particularly well suited to jazz. The spruce top, combined with maple back and sides, delivers a response that is warm, dynamic and precise. The three-piece maple neck features the GB profile, developed around George Benson’s playing preferences. Its 628 mm scale length and 305 mm radius provide a remarkably comfortable playing feel, while the ebony fretboard offers a smooth touch and crisp articulation.
The GB10SE is far more than just a beautiful hollow body guitar: it has a voice of its own. Its two Ibanez GB Special humbuckers deliver the rich, rounded and articulate jazz tone expected from an instrument of this kind. The low end remains deep without becoming muddy, the midrange offers enough body to keep chords clear and defined, and the highs remain smooth and precise. With two independent volume controls and two tone controls, it is easy to move from a soft, mellow sound to a more focused and cutting tone, making the guitar equally convincing for contemporary jazz, blues, soul and funk.
The ebony bridge, GB10 tailpiece and Half-Bone / Half-Brass hybrid nut further contribute to the instrument’s precision and definition. The factory-fitted D’Addario ECG24 Flatwound strings naturally enhance its jazz character, offering a smooth attack, a wonderfully comfortable feel and the velvety response that makes flatwound strings so appealing.
Another particularly valuable feature is Ibanez’s attention to controlling feedback at higher volumes. The GB Special pickups are designed to help reduce the feedback issues commonly associated with hollow body guitars, allowing players to take full advantage of the instrument’s dynamics without having to keep the volume excessively low.
The GB10SE-BS is therefore a wonderful introduction to the world of George Benson and Ibanez’s great jazz boxes. It offers a genuine personality, excellent playability and a highly convincing tone, all supported by Ibanez’s expertise in ergonomics and instrument design. An especially appealing guitar for jazz, of course, but also for any guitarist looking for an elegant, expressive hollow body capable of producing beautifully rich and nuanced sounds.
A particularly successful George Benson Signature model, capturing the spirit of the instruments associated with one of jazz’s most iconic guitarists, while offering an accessible and remarkably accomplished version of this celebrated design.
