AKG D310 — “THE LOYAL SIMPLETON”

Introduced in 1978, the AKG D310 belongs to AKG’s first dedicated generation of professional vocal microphones. Within that family, the D310 represented the simpler end of the range — and that is perhaps the best way to understand it.

We affectionately call it “The Loyal Simpleton.”

There is very little to distract from the job at hand: no switches, no elaborate controls, just a rugged dynamic cardioid microphone with a remarkably straightforward construction. Yet the simplicity is deceptive. Considerable acoustic work happens behind the grille, resulting in a microphone that is forgiving with vocals, resistant to plosives and easy to use without much thought about technique.

It is also a microphone that invites actual use. The Austrian-made metal construction is exceptionally solid, the connector is integrated directly into the main casting, and the large protective rings surrounding the grille make the D310 unusually difficult to hurt in normal working conditions. This is the kind of microphone that ends up coming along precisely because you do not have to worry about it.

And on the right source, this loyal simpleton can be surprisingly difficult to replace.

OPTICAL CONDITION

Very good vintage condition.

The silver body remains clean with only minimal scratches and normal signs of use. The lettering shows some age and is no longer perfectly pronounced. The upper grille has a few extremely subtle deformations consistent with light impact over its lifetime, but remains very well preserved overall.

The microphone presents beautifully for a professional working example of its age.

TECHNICAL CONDITION

Fully tested and working perfectly.

The microphone has been carefully cleaned and inspected. The deteriorated acoustic material behind the grille has been replaced while retaining the original internal construction and acoustic arrangement.

The removable metal grille was thoroughly cleaned and the microphone was reassembled and tested afterward.

Output is strong, clean and balanced.

BUILD & DESIGN

The D310 is an excellent example of the changing philosophy of professional microphone construction during the late 1970s. Rather than complexity for its own sake, the design concentrates sophistication where it matters while making the microphone itself remarkably straightforward to manufacture, maintain and use.

Its outer construction is particularly satisfying. Much of the microphone is essentially one substantial metal casting, extending from the XLR end toward the grille. Even the XLR socket is incorporated into this structure rather than being housed in a separate end piece. At the opposite end, large metal rings surround and protect the grille.

There are no switches and remarkably few vulnerable external components. In practical terms, it is a steel rod with an XLR at one end and a carefully engineered acoustic system at the other.

Behind that apparent simplicity, however, the grille assembly is considerably more sophisticated. Removing the screw-on upper section reveals a shaped internal plastic structure surrounding the capsule, together with carefully positioned acoustic material. This arrangement provides effective wind and plosive protection while controlling what reaches the capsule.

It reflects an important development of the period: professional microphone engineering was increasingly moving beyond the studio and toward microphones designed as complete, rugged systems for real-world vocal use. The D310 is a particularly pure expression of that idea.

Nearly half a century later, that philosophy still makes sense. This is not a microphone that needs to spend its life in a display cabinet.

It is a working tool — one you can throw into a recording bag, take to rehearsals, put in front of a singer, use on an amplifier or experiment with around a drum kit without treating it like jewellery.

SOUND / FREQUENCY RESPONSE

The D310 has a distinctly vocal-oriented balance, but without becoming overly aggressive or narrowly voiced.

Its lower range has enough substance to give a voice or instrument genuine body and punch, while the low-midrange remains comparatively uncluttered. In particular, there is a sense of restraint through the area where many dynamic microphones can become muddy or boxy.

Above this, the microphone opens again into a clear and surprisingly airy presence region. It does not rely on extreme high-frequency extension for its sense of detail; instead, the upper response provides air and intelligibility without becoming painfully sharp or brittle.

The overall impression is therefore one of warmth underneath, clarity through the middle and open air above.

On vocals, the excellent internal wind and plosive protection becomes part of the experience. The D310 does not demand particularly disciplined microphone technique: put it in front of a singer and let them sing.

Simple.

And very often, that is exactly what you want.
