A 1980 Alembic Distillate Guitar.
Alembic was founded in 1969 by members of the Grateful Dead's sound crew. To solve noise problems in live and recording use, they were the first to build low-impedance pickups and an active preamp directly into an instrument, revolutionizing the guitar world that followed. The Distillate Guitar was introduced in 1979 as a budget model.
A single pickup with volume, a tone/frequency control, hi-cut and lo-cut switches, and a tone/frequency select switch; unlike the flagship models, output here is mono. An LED next to the jack shows whether the battery is on. Despite having just one pickup, the controls let it move between single-coil and humbucker-like tones, a clear yet mellow P-90-ish voice, and a dry, out-of-phase-style sound.
The laminated through-neck construction, one of Alembic's signature features, delivers long sustain along with genuinely high-end looks and sound.
