Up for sale is a nice1980 Guild D-40C.
The Guild D-40 is one of the central models in Guild’s flat-top lineup, alongside the D-50. Introduced in 1963, the cutaway version, the D-40C, was introduced in 1975. At the time of its release, major American guitar manufacturers did not seem to offer dreadnought-style cutaway models, making the D-40C arguably one of the earliest dreadnought cutaway guitars of its kind. Production numbers also appear to have been relatively limited, making this a particularly rare model.
This item is a 1980 Guild D-40C made at the Westerly factory. The spruce top has developed a beautiful honey-colored patina over the years, giving the guitar a wonderfully vintage appearance. It complements the tortoiseshell-style pickguard beautifully. The Guild headstock logo has also aged to a striking golden color.
The guitar features a solid spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides, a mahogany neck, and a rosewood fingerboard. It retains its original Guild-stamped Schaller tuning machines.
The neck has an approximately 43 mm nut width and a comfortable, moderately substantial profile that feels very good in the hand. The scale length is approximately 648 mm.
Sonically, this guitar delivers the mature, seasoned tone characteristic of a well-played vintage instrument. The sound is rich and punchy, with excellent clarity and a well-defined note character. Brightness and depth are beautifully balanced, and the guitar has an excellent response.
In terms of condition, there is a repaired crack on the inside of the pickguard area extending from the end of the fingerboard toward the sound hole, as well as various dings and other signs of use. However, there is no serious structural damage. A previously installed pickup has been removed, and the original endpin has been replaced with a jack-sized endpin. A strap pin has also been installed at the neck heel. The truss rod cover, nut, saddle, and several other components have been replaced. The frets remain in good usable condition, and the action is properly set.
This is a well-seasoned Guild with plenty of character, capable of handling everything from strumming to aggressive lead playing. It is a highly enjoyable vintage instrument with a distinctive, mature voice.
We highly recommend it.
Comes with the hard case shown in the photos.
