2012 Thomas Rein RJN5 Premium Boutique Acoustic Guitar Lutz Spruce / Malaysian Blackwood

I recently acquired this incredible piece, but I have a ton of recording expenses, bills, and an upcoming mortgage payment due. Before I get too attached to it, I am putting it up for sale. I just went through a massive liquidation (and still have some cymbals and drum hardware for sale on reverb), but I have a real problem with buying guitars. I saw this one and had to have it, but I really cannot keep it. Many of you can relate, I'm sure. I had never played a Thomas Rein before, although I have owned high end guitars by Collings, Stehr, Santa Cruz, etc. This one just sounds so unique. Honestly I have never played anything quite like it. There is so much "information" being transmitted when you pick the notes (for lack of a better word). It is just not like any other guitar I've played or heard in person. Very deep, intriguing, mysterious tone. The ability to adjust the fingerboard height relative to the strings (action) while the guitar is setup with a simple Allen wrench is pure genius.

For sale is a 2012 Lutz spruce (from Shane Neifer, for those who know)/quartersawn Malaysian Blackwood RJN-5 guitar built by luthier Thomas Rein. The RJN-5 is 14 frets to the body, similar in dimensions to a dreadnought (15-11/16" lower bout width) but the body shape was designed by Tom allowing for the bridge to be placed further down in the lower bout like a 12 fret guitar. It is short scale, 24.9", but is powerful in its sonority while also having exceptional touch sensitivity. A unique aspect to Tom's guitars is the adjustable neck, only needing an allen key to adjust the action and never needing a neck reset.

The guitar has no structural issues but has significant cosmetic issues, hence the significant price discount. There were a couple of nail marks from my dog when she was a puppy many years ago but Tom repaired them using french polish (the top is french polish, back/sides nitro). The significant cosmetic issue is a 3" scratch on the top that went through the finish, but did not cause any cracks in the soundboard - you can feel wood grain. I tried to capture this in a close up picture. Overall the guitar plays 100%, sounds 100%, and has no playability/durability issues but is definitely in player's grade condition cosmetically. It has a one piece mahogany neck with gotoh 510s with wood buttons. The nut width is 1.75", string spacing is 2.25" and the neck shape is a very comfortable medium to full C shape. It can handle lights or mediums but I think is best using either lights or lights/mediums (12.5-55) in standard tuning or mediums a half step down.

Tom has sold his guitars at both guitar gallery and dream guitars. I think his experience building classicals translates into a purity in his voicing, a trait I also noticed in Dake Traphagen's work. The used market for Tom's guitars are in the 5-6k range, I am selling it heavily discounted for a quick sale due to the aforementioned cosmetic issues and for personal reasons. I am not going to outline those here but am happy to disclose to the buyer for full transparency. The guitar will come with a standard dreadnought case with padding added for secure fit.

I truly believe there isn't a better guitar at this price.
