When Gibson introduced the Les Paul Special in 1955, it was intended to be a more elegant version of the Les Paul Junior. It had two pickups, whereas the Junior had only one, and thanks to a mother-of-pearl logo inlay on the headstock and a fingerboard with binding, it had gained visual appeal. It thus became a model positioned between the more elegant Les Paul Standard and the entry-level Les Paul Junior. In 1958, the body was changed to a double cutaway, making the entire length of the fretboard more accessible. The Les Paul Special really took off in 1960 when the neck pickup was slightly repositioned. The neck was updated to the SlimTaper profile, which allowed for faster playing, improved neck stability, and made playing easier than ever.
Epiphone is proud to introduce the Les Paul Special Double Cut, a reissue of these early 1960s models “Inspired by Gibson.” It features a mahogany body with a double cutaway that provides unobstructed access to the entire fretboard. The set mahogany neck has a 60s SlimTaper profile. It features a rosewood fingerboard with binding, equipped with 22 medium-jumbo frets and adorned with Perloid dot inlays. The 1960s Kalamazoo headstock is equipped with Epiphone “Three-on-a-Plate” tuning machines with ivory-colored knobs and features a Graph Tech nut, which ensures reliable tuning stability and gives the guitar an unmistakable vintage look. The Epiphone logo is set in mother-of-pearl. At the other end, the strings are secured by the Epiphone Lightning Bar, a compensated wraparound bridge that is screwed directly into the body, thereby enhancing sustain and resonance. The sound of the Les Paul Special Double Cut comes from a pair of Epiphone P-90 soapbar single-coil pickups that can do it all—from sweet, crystal-clear tones to fiery, distorted sounds. Each pickup is hardwired with its own volume and tone controls, making the sound even more versatile. The new Epiphone Les Paul Special Double Cut is “Special” in every way—and now more affordable than ever. A premium gig bag is also included.
