This 1966 Fender Mustang began its life in the mid‑sixties as part of Fender’s original “student model” lineup—an instrument designed to be approachable, comfortable, and affordable. Yet from the moment it left Fullerton, it carried the same DNA, build quality, and tonal character that made Fender’s offset guitars beloved by working musicians. What makes this Mustang exceptional, however, is not simply its birth year. It is the life it has lived since 1980, under the care of a 2nd owner whose hands shaped its identity as much as Fender’s factory or 1st owner ever did.

1980 — The Beginning of a Lifelong Bond

In 1980, the guitar was purchased by a young, MOST LIKLEY barley‑enhanced enthusiast who saw not a collectible, but a canvas. A buddy of mine. The Mustang was already showing honest wear, but it was still structurally original and full of potential. With the confidence and curiosity of youth, the 1st owner took sandpaper to the finish and performed a full refinish—an act that permanently intertwined his craftsmanship with the guitar’s future.

The headstock, originally bearing its factory Fender logo, was recoated during this refinishing. The logo remained beneath the new finish, but the guitar now carried a personalized, hand‑applied surface that would age uniquely over the next four decades.

A Custom Feature Born From Inspiration

During that same year—again, MOST LIKELY barley‑enhanced— its 1st owner made a bold and remarkably precise modification: a hand‑carved, elongated ridge running down the entire front side of the body. Approximately 1/16" deep, this ridge was shaped evenly and intentionally, becoming a natural ergonomic rest for the lower thumb muscle and inner hand while playing.

This feature is not factory. It is not common. It is not replicated.

It is personal.

It is part of the guitar’s identity, and part of the player’s technique.

The ridge remains today, perfectly worn‑in, perfectly functional, and perfectly unique.

Forty‑Six Years of Play, Wear, and Honest Aging

Over the next four decades, the Mustang became a true companion instrument. It was played, handled, gigged, and lived with—not stored, not preserved, not treated as a museum piece. Its relic wear is entirely natural, earned through time and touch.

I, as its 3nd owner approximately five years ago, obtained it with the headstock markings (the Fender Mustang markings)—already beneath the 1980 refinish— although it had worn almost completely away. Rather than apply a poor‑quality aftermarket decal, I chose authenticity over artificial restoration. The headstock was treated with a 2000‑grit gloss sand and many coats of lemon oil, blending the surface into a smooth, unified, naturally aged finish. The result is a headstock that reflects its true history: played, touched, loved, and never falsified.

Despite the refinishing, the custom ridge, and decades of use, the guitar retains an impressive amount of original hardware and structural integrity:

- Only the neck pickup has been replaced
