Overview: This is National's first wood-body tricone ever made and has an '09 date of build. It varies a bit from their current models that I've seen in for setup and sale and has its own, lovely, curious sound. The biggest difference is that the soundwell is all CNC-cut from plywood rather than the usual metal soundwell (borrowed from the metal-body guitars) that is fit-into the wood bodies on current models.
It also has brass cones. Why? Who knows? There are production notes on the underside of the cones (see pics) and they look pretty hip seen through the coverplate grill. In any case, they're lightly-cut and have a mellower, less-punchy, more-sustained, and "brassier" vibe than aluminum cones but the guitar still has, perhaps, 80% of the volume of a normal tricone model -- plenty loud.
The guitar also looks a beaut -- the coverplate is finished in a ruddy sunburst effect that is perfectly-matched to the mahogany body. It's slick and it's also extremely clean. This thing looks like it was built just a few months ago.
Repairs included: I did a little T-bridge seating, fussed with compensation and adjustments to the saddle, and set it up for fingerstyle/normal playing with quick action. It's playing spot-on and ready to go.
