This 1981 Greco SS-600 is a seriously cool piece from the golden era of Japanese guitar building, faithfully recreating the distinctive look and feel of a mid-'70s Norlin-era Gibson SG Standard. Finished in a deep Wine Red, this one has all the details that make this particular SS-600 version stand out — the oversized '70s-style headstock, rectangular block inlays, and the massive wide-travel “Harmonica” bridge.

The guitar is in good vintage condition for its age and has clearly been played and enjoyed over the last 45 years. There are various scratches, small chips, dings and other signs of honest use throughout the body and neck, but nothing we would consider significant or structurally concerning. Overall, it has a fantastic naturally aged appearance — lots of character without looking abused. In person, the Wine Red finish and aged hardware make this guitar look especially killer.

The frets are in good playable condition with even wear consistent with the guitar's age. There are no deep divots, problematic spots or dead notes, and the guitar has been professionally set up and is ready to play.

The electronics have been refreshed with new CTS pots, while the pickups are the vintage Japanese humbuckers currently installed in the guitar, both carrying 210522 markings on the back. They deliver exactly the kind of thick, open and slightly raw humbucker character that suits this SG-style platform beautifully.

One of the coolest things about this SS-600 is how unapologetically '70s it is. Rather than copying the more common early-'60s SG design, Greco went after the Norlin-era SG Standard, complete with the large headstock, unusual rectangular fingerboard inlays and oversized Harmonica bridge. It gives the guitar a very distinctive look and makes it immediately recognizable among the countless traditional SG copies from the period.

A great example of an early-'80s Japanese Greco with genuine vintage character, killer looks and a very playable feel. These SS-600s are becoming increasingly difficult to find in good, original-looking condition, especially with this combination of Wine Red finish and full '70s-style appointments.

No case included. Professionally set up and ready to play. Weight: 7lb

The following work has been done: full cleaning, lemon oil fretboard treatment, fret spot leveling/polishing and string height setup (2.3 mm at the 12th fret on the low E string), pickup height adjusted for balance and clarity, and a fresh set of D'Addario XL 10/46 strings installed.
