DOLBY A-Type model 361 Noise Reduction Frame w/ CAT No. 22 Card

For sale is a vintage Dolby Model 361 A-Type Noise Reduction Unit, complete with its Cat. No. 22 Dolby A noise reduction module.

Introduced in the early 1970s, the Dolby 361 was a staple of professional recording studios during the analog multitrack era. Originally designed as a single-channel Dolby A encode/decode system for reducing tape noise, these units have also found a second life in modern studios as unique analog processors.

THE DOLBY A “TRICK”

One of the most interesting modern uses for the 361 is the famous Dolby A Trick. By using the Dolby A encoding circuitry as an effect without the corresponding decoding stage, the Cat. 22’s multiband processing and high-frequency emphasis can add air, presence, detail, and density to a source.

It can be especially interesting on:

• Lead and backing vocals
• Acoustic and electric guitars
• Drum overheads and room microphones
• Percussion
• Keyboards and synthesizers
• Other tracks that could benefit from additional presence and high-frequency detail

This is the actual vintage Dolby hardware and Cat. 22 circuitry, making it an interesting alternative to modern software recreations of the effect.

The unit can also be used for its original purpose of encoding and decoding Dolby A material, making it useful for studios working with archival analog recordings originally made using Dolby A noise reduction.

CONDITION / PLEASE READ

I have not personally used this unit since acquiring it, so it is being sold as-is and I cannot personally verify every function.

The previous owner represented to me that everything works as intended with the exception of the meter illumination. The meter lamp does not illuminate and has not since I have owned the unit. The other front-panel indicator lights illuminate as expected.

Because I have not personally put the unit through a studio setup or performed a complete functional test, I am passing along the previous owner's description rather than representing the unit as fully tested by me. Please purchase with this understanding.

The faceplate/cover on the Cat. 22 cartridge is brand new, giving the module a particularly clean appearance.

As expected for a genuine vintage studio processor of this age, the chassis may show normal cosmetic signs of use. Please review the photos carefully for the exact cosmetic condition.
