VOX AC50 Mk III Head – 1966 – JMI, Made in England – Vintage Tube Amp

For sale is an original VOX AC50 Mark III amplifier head, made by Jennings Musical Industries (JMI) in England in 1966, during the golden era of Vox production.

The AC50 was introduced as a higher-powered alternative to the AC30 and became a favorite among touring musicians for its powerful clean tone, rich harmonic overdrive, and unmistakable vintage Vox character.

Details:

• Original JMI "Vox Amplifier" rear plate: Model AC50, serial no. 05524, 115/255V, rating 138 watts
• Chassis stamped "AC 50 SER NO 2173". This is normal for Burndept-built AC50s, whose chassis numbers don't run in sequence with the serial plates.
• Pots date-coded "AN" (January 1966)
• Mk III features: solid-state rectified, 2 channels (Normal and Brilliant), 4 inputs
• Round Amphenol XLR speaker outputs (2 × 16Ω, with 8Ω/16Ω link plug)
• Red warning plaque on the back panel
• Grey control panel, "A JMI Product"
• Voltage selector, fuse holder, pilot lamp
• All-tube design, EL34 power tubes
• Front grille cloth replaced with a diamond-pattern reproduction cloth (not original)

Electronics:
The amp has been serviced in the past. The electrolytic capacitors (filter caps and several cathode bypass caps) have been replaced. The tag board, carbon resistors, smaller capacitors, pots and transformers appear to be original. Soldering is clean and tidy. Please see the internal photos.

Condition:
Good vintage condition with expected cosmetic wear from 60 years of use: scuffs and small worn spots on the vinyl and corners. The front grille cloth has been replaced and is not original. Please review all photos carefully, as they form part of the description.

Sound:
Classic British valve tone: chimey cleans, a rich midrange, and warm, musical overdrive when pushed.
