When an acoustic player wants the intimacy and responsiveness of a small-bodied guitar without sacrificing the depth and complexity associated with rosewood, this used Martin Vintage Series 00-28VS offers a compelling connection to an earlier era of American guitar making. The 00-28 traces its lineage to Martin's historic 00-size instruments, and the 00-28VS draws deliberately from the company's prewar vocabulary with a 12-fret body, slotted headstock, pyramid bridge, herringbone trim, and traditional dovetail neck joint. Built in 2008, this example pairs a spruce top with East Indian rosewood back and sides and an Aging Toner finish that reinforces its vintage-inspired appearance.

The 12-fret configuration is central to the character of the 00-28VS. By joining the neck to the body at the 12th fret, Martin uses proportions associated with its earlier steel-string designs, giving this guitar a different feel and response than a more contemporary 14-fret 00. Beneath the spruce top, scalloped X-bracing allows the compact soundboard to respond freely, while East Indian rosewood contributes harmonic richness, lingering overtones, and a broad tonal palette. Fine herringbone top inlay, grained ivoroid binding, a zig-zag back strip, and an abalone Diamonds and Squares Short Pattern fingerboard inlay provide the understated ornamentation traditionally associated with Style 28 instruments.

Its neck specifications further distinguish the 00-28VS from many modern acoustics.
