This 1968 Gibson SG Standard is in very good vintage condition. This instrument displays signs of play wear, age and modifications throughout including belt buckle wear on the back of the body, finish checking, pick scratches, and some small scrapes and dings. The original lyre vibrato has been removed and a stop tailpiece has been professionally installed. There is a small hole from a previously installed mini toggle switch, the knobs are replacements, a black plastic plate has been installed on the front of the guitar below the bridge from a previously installed tailpiece (I think it was a Burns style vibrato), and the treble side horn has been sawed off for weight reduction (haha). The wiring harness is not original and the original pickups have been replaced with a set of BrandonWound PAF style pickups. This guitar blacklights perfectly and there have not been any breaks or cracks or crack repairs.

This old battle axe of an SG has an absolutely killer feeling medium chunky rounded neck profile that tapers larger toward the 12 fret and has a 1 9/16” nut width and since it’s a 1968, it features a one piece mahogany neck with no volute and no Made in USA stamp (rather than the three piece necks from 1969 onward and the volute and USA stamp from 1970 onward). The fret wire on this guitar is original and is in good shape. It has been dressed probably more than once, but the frets still have plenty of meat left. This guitar has received a pro set up so it plays fantastic up and down the rosewood fingerboard with low smooth action and spot on intonation. This guitar doesn’t fret out or buzz - it’s a killer player! Both BrandonWound pickups sound exceptional and deliver a super woody, hollow, articulate muscular tone that excels through a nasty overdriven Marshall flavored amp! This thing nails old AC/DC tones and is a total blast to play. As far as the missing horn is concerned… I’m not sure why this was done to this guitar. Maybe it developed a crack? Maybe the previous owner thought it looked cool or maybe they loved Eddie Van Halen who famously took a hacksaw to the treble side horn of his 1962 Gibson SG Junior for  easier access to the higher frets… who knows?! This isn’t a common or super desirable modification I suppose, but I think it adds a certain charm and unmistakable vibe to this old SG and I hope that this thing becomes somebody’s main squeeze! This guitar is housed in a well fitting Epiphone SG hardshell case and will ship out promptly and securely from our little shop here in Tennessee to your front door!
