Suzuki B-24 Bass-24 Professional 24-Key Bass Melodion Melodica Red/Black – Tested – No Mouthpiece

Here is a very cool and relatively uncommon Suzuki B-24 Bass-24 Melodion, finished in the classic red, black and white color combination. Mouthpiece is NOT included.

Unlike a conventional alto or soprano melodica, the B-24 was specifically designed to cover the bass register. Suzuki originally developed its B-24 bass Melodion design to provide the low-end foundation in Melodion and instrumental ensembles. Its specialized bass reeds produce a remarkably deep, full-bodied sound from such a compact keyboard instrument.

This example is in very good used condition and has been tested. The original mouthpiece is missing, so we tested the instrument by carefully blowing directly into the air inlet. The instrument responds and produces sound, with an especially nice, rich low register.

The B-24 features 24 keys with a bass range from F through E1. Suzuki describes the bass Melodion as having a rich, resilient tone designed to give ensembles a strong low-frequency foundation.

The instrument uses a free-reed design: air supplied by the player activates the internal reeds while the keyboard determines which notes sound. This allows the player to combine keyboard-style fingering with the articulation and dynamics available from breath control.

Suzuki's current B-24C descendant uses phosphor-bronze reeds, measures approximately 330 × 115 × 63 mm (13 × 4.5 × 2.5"), and weighs approximately 846 g / 1.87 lb. Because this is the earlier B-24 pictured rather than the current B-24C, those measurements are provided only as useful reference and not represented as exact specifications for this particular vintage.

A Specialized Bass Instrument

The B-24 occupies a very different role from the more common 32- and 37-key melodicas. Its purpose is to supply the bottom end, making it useful for melodica ensembles, experimental music, recording, accompaniment, bass lines and musicians looking for an unusual acoustic keyboard/reed sound.

Suzuki explains that the B-24's bass-reed design produces abundant overtones, allowing it to work not only for traditional bass lines but also for melodic passages in the middle-low register.

Condition

Used – Very Good

The instrument presents very nicely overall. There are minor signs of previous ownership and normal cosmetic wear, but the exterior, keys, end panels and carrying handle remain in very good overall condition.

Tested and producing sound. Because the mouthpiece is missing, testing was performed by blowing directly into the air inlet. The instrument produced a strong response with a particularly pleasing, deep low-end tone.

Suzuki currently identifies the MP-121 short mouthpiece as the standard mouthpiece supplied with its B-24C bass Melodion, so a replacement mouthpiece can be sourced separately.
