Here is an early-1962 Epiphone EA-50T Pacemaker. This is the less common, earlier version with tremolo, and the "Bikini Logo". This amp is identical to the late-'50s/early-'60s Blonde/Tan tolex Gibson GA-5T amps, and was made in the Gibson factory right alongside them. Essentially, there are cosmetic differences as part of the Epiphone branding, but for all intents and purposes, it's a GA-5T! It even shares the same transformers. These amps are small, but mighty, with incredibly-musical breakup and saturation. I was surprised by how much low end and overall output it had when I played through it for the first time (it sounded glorious with my Les Paul Junior!). Admittedly, I thought it might sound a bit small and boxy, but I was absolutely mistaken. It has a punchy, powerful sound and feel, and I actually prefer it to the Tweed Champs I've owned and played. These amps are certainly not one-trick-ponies! If you turn it nearly all the way up, you can use your guitar volume control to get anything from chimey cleans to super-gritty overdrive, and it has a fair amount of clean headroom. The tremolo is super fun and choppy, and inspires you to play a bit differently, in the best way. This one has an added extension speaker jack, giving you further tonal possibilities to run it through a different cabinet, although I've never felt the desire to use it as the amp already sounds so great as-is. It's been serviced and has a 3-prong grounded cord, so it's ready to plug and play!
Here are the highlights:
- Exceptionally-clean condition. Original schematic included.
- Finished in early-1962. Earlier "Bikini Logo" version, and identical to the late-'50s/early-'60s Gibson GA-5T amp.
- ~5 watts w/ Tremolo and an 8" speaker.
- Original transformers, late-'61 and early-'62 date codes.
- Serviced, with a 3-prong grounded power cord.
- Speaker changed to a Utah B8JC-W (looks to be from 1969). It sounds great it this amp!
- Added extension speaker jack, giving you the option to run the amp through a different cabinet.
Condition: This amp is in great condition, both cosmetically and functionally. The faceplate shows some patina and pitting, but this seems to happen with all of them, and the text is perfectly intact and legible. Both vertical blocks that the top back panel fastens to show an extra screw hole, only visible when the panel is removed. The tube sockets are a bit loose, although they function perfectly fine. I've only ever used this amp at home, so it's not been an issue, but if you're traveling a lot with this amp it may be a good idea to have them retensioned. The previous owner had this amp serviced around 5 years ago, and it's been rock solid ever since. It's never a bad idea to have a vintage amp checked over by a qualified tech as part of routine general maintenance if it's been a few years since the last service, but there are no glaring issues that would suggest it needs any attention.
Please message me with any questions or concerns before submitting offers and/or payment and I will be happy to help. This amp will be packaged extremely well using a heavy duty box and plenty of packing material to ensure its safety during transit. I'll remove, wrap and number each tube (in order of installation), and place them in a box inside the back of the amp. Everything will be packed tightly and securely. It will also be insured for the full value. Signature required upon delivery unless requested otherwise. Sold as-is, no returns. Thank you!
Quick disclaimer: With vintage amps, it’s always a good idea to have them looked over by a qualified amp tech once in your possession. I can guarantee that it’s as-described and working properly right now while in my possession (I always record a short play test video before shipping), but most of these components (tubes, capacitors, resistors, etc.) are old, and can sometimes be unpredictable. After arrival, I recommend to have all mechanical connections checked and tightened if needed, as sometimes things can loosen slightly as the amp moves and vibrates in shipping. I recommend that any and all maintenance and servicing only be performed by a qualified amp tech, as tube amps can carry high levels of voltage and should be approached with caution. I will not assume any responsibility for the amp after it leaves me and is confirmed to have arrived safely (in the condition as-described in this listing) to the new owner. Thank you for reading!
